Welcome to Year 8 English

Year Eight English is organised into the domains of Language, Literature and Literacy. Students are engaged with a variety of texts. Thelisten to, readview, interpret, evaluate and perform a range of spoken, written and multimodal texts in which the primary purpose is aesthetic, as well as texts designed to inform and persuade. These texts include a selection of short stories, adolescent novels, fiction and non-fiction texts. Students will explore Indigenous Australian culture as well as discussing Australian identity and how it has changed over time. Students create a range of imaginative, informative and persuasive types of texts to show their understanding of the content covered in class.

Key inquiry questions

A framework for developing students’ knowledge, understanding and skills concerning language, literature and literacy is addressed through the inclusion of focus questions and activities designed to improve skills and comprehension, based on the examination of written, visual and multi-modal texts and the creation of original written and multi-modal texts.

The key focus questions for Year 8 are listed below.

  • How are written, visual and multimodal texts shaped by the cultural environment in which they are produced?
  • How do texts employ generic conventions and specific techniques to position the reader to values and ideas?
  • How does language use change due to time and place and how has technology influenced these changes?

Level 2

provides additional background information and further reading. Introduces some subject-specific language.

Level 3

lengthy, detailed information. Frequently uses technical/subject-specific language.
